Financing Study Abroad at the University of Arizona
We encourage students to financially plan ahead and look for financial support from many resources: loans, grants scholarships, departments, family members, employers, extra curricular organizations, and religious or social affiliations. The UA Office of Student Financial Aid will be a great help regarding questions about loans, grants or scholarships.

Financial Planning Considerations:
Students should also be aware that the application and pre-departure process will require a certain amount of money in advance. This is especially important to be aware of because federal loans, scholarships and grants usually do not arrive until the first day of class at UA each semester and some expenses must be covered before that time. Some students look into for temporary loans to cover these initial expenses.
Students participating in UA study abroad programs could expect the following costs prior to leaving:
- Application Fee: $80
- Program Deposit: $300 - $1050
-
-
Insurance: $0 - $300
-
Student Visa: $0 - $500
- Airfare: $500 - $1500
- Pocket money upon arrival in country: $100 - $300
Billing and Payment Timeline:
- Application Fee: posted to a student's UA StudentLink account automatically after a student requests an online application.
- Non-refundable Deposit: posted to an applicant's UA StudentLink account shortly after acceptance and will not be removed if a student cancels from a program. The deposit may range from $300-1050, depending on the program. This deposit will be applied toward your total program costs.
- Final study abroad program fees: posted about 30-45 days prior to the start of the program start or UA term. The payment deadlines coincide with UA tuition payment deadlines. Students should pay fees within 30 days of posting to avoid late fees. It is important to secure appropriate funding in advance and to make a "fall back" plan if you are applying for scholarships or other unguaranteed funding.
Payment and Cancellation Policy:
- Please note that you are liable for any fees which Study Abroad and Student Exchange pays on your behalf. Most program costs are due about 1-2 months before a program starts. This means at about 30 days prior to departure you can expect to be liable for the entire cost of the program even if you have not yet made a payment.
