Academics
This study tour will expose students to ancient Greek mythology through readings and first-hand experience in the region that gave rise to the myths. The program will visit numerous ancient Greek sites and museums located on the Greek mainland and on two Greek islands. These provide familiarity with the land and established icons of ancient Greek art, architecture, and engineering and with the related concepts of landscape and aesthetics.
The accompanying readings offer literary, social, and cultural dimensions to the mute artifacts. Readings on Greek history and culture supply background for understanding both the artifacts and the mythology, while readings in ancient Greek mythology provide opportunities to discuss the importance of mythology, meanings of the stories, and ideas about the world, gods, human and gender identity, religious beliefs, moral standards, and more.
In addition, glorious beaches, spectacular mountains, scrumptious Mediterranean food, and lively cultural events promise to make this an exciting, invigorating, and overall enriching way to study mythology.
Students will earn 6 units of UA direct credit for their participation in this program:
CLAS 302: Myth and Landscape in Ancient Greece (6 units)
To apply these credits to your major, minor, or general education requirements, please meet with your academic advisor.
Location
The program for Summer 2010 will begin and end in Athens, Greece, where the Hellenic Educational and Research Center (HERC) provides a base for the trip with meeting rooms, library and computers. After visiting the Acropolis and other major Athenian locales, we visit major historic sites and museums circling the Peloponnesus-Corinth, Mycenae, Sparta, Messene, Pylos, Olympia, more-north to Delphi, the islands of Delos, Mykonos and Naxos, and ending in Athens. Students will also experience the natural beauty of the Greek landscape, from a modern urban center to glorious beaches to mountain sites with spectacular views.

Accommodations for this summer study tour will be in triple occupancy rooms in three star hotels.
